2 hour Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Session

Session Overview
This 2-hour CPD session introduces the Design for Everyone Guide and provides practical insight into applying Universal Design principles in sport and recreation facilities. Developed by Access Institute Director – Joe Manton, in collaboration with Sport and Recreation Victoria, the Guide moves beyond compliance, and supports inclusive design outcomes for sport and recreation buildings, facilities and active recreation spaces. The comprehensive guide is freely available online to everyone.

Participants will be guided through a structured framework to deliver inclusive, accessible environments across a range of settings.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will be able to:

  • Understand the limitations of compliance frameworks
  • Explain the application of Universal Design
  • Apply the 4-tier Inclusive Design Guidance (IDG) hierarchy
  • Identify key considerations for common and facility-specific elements
  • Embed inclusion at early project stages
  • Apply strategies to improve usability and participation

Session Content:

  1. Beyond Compliance
    Overview of frameworks (DDA, Premises Standards, NCC, AS 1428.1) and key limitations
  2. What is Design for Everyone?
    Inclusive design principles and understanding diverse users
  3. IDG Hierarchy
    Principles, common elements, and facility-specific considerations
  4. Applying the Guide
    Key design areas: paths of travel, amenities, wayfinding, and sensory environments
    Case studies: aquatic centres, sports pavilions, play spaces
  5. Delivering Better Outcomes
    Embedding inclusion in planning, briefs, and design to improve long-term outcomes
