Creating outdoor environments and playgrounds that welcome and support people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds is essential for fostering inclusive, healthy, and connected communities. This 3 hour live course provides participants with practical knowledge and strategies to develop outdoor spaces and playgrounds that meet the needs of diverse users, while aligning with relevant Australian legislation, standards, and best practice in Universal Design.

- Overview of Universal Design principles and their application to outdoor environments and play spaces.
- Understanding equity, dignity, and choice as fundamental drivers of inclusive outdoor design.
- Legislation and Standards
- Overview of Key Australian Standards relevant to outdoor spaces and playgrounds.
- How the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (DDA) and the Premises Standards 2010 influence outdoor and playground design.
- Designing for Diverse Users
- Key features that make playgrounds and outdoor spaces welcoming and functional for everyone including children and adults with disability, older people, carers, families, and culturally diverse communities.
- Considerations for sensory, physical, and cognitive accessibility, including circulation routes, play equipment, seating, signage, shade, installations and communication.
- Integration of natural elements and opportunities for social interaction, creativity, and risk-managed play.
- Practical Application
- Tools and checklists for auditing and assessing outdoor spaces against compliance and Universal Design principles.

This course is designed for anyone with responsibility for parks and playgrounds including local government officers, landscape architects, urban designers, access consultants, community organisations, playground providers, and anyone involved in planning, designing, or managing outdoor spaces and playgrounds.
By the end of the session, learners will have a clear understanding of the key features of inclusive outdoor environments, how to apply relevant Australian Standards in practice, and how to embed Universal Design to create spaces that are truly for everyone.
