  • CPPACC5016 – Provide expert access advice on renovations to private dwellings

These units of competency are drawn from the CPP40821 Certificate IV in Access Consulting and CPP50721 Diploma of Access Consulting.

The course has been specifically developed for qualified Occupational Therapists seeking to strengthen their knowledge and skills in the assessment, specification and implementation of home modifications for people with disability, older people and others with access related needs.

Supporting Professional Development in Home Modifications
The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) requires Occupational Therapists undertaking home modification assessments to possess appropriate knowledge and skills in the assessment, specification and implementation of home modifications.

This course provides structured, nationally recognised training in these areas and supports Occupational Therapists to develop the technical knowledge required to assess existing dwellings and recommend home modifications that improve accessibility, safety, independence and liveability.

Course Overview
The aim of this course is to provide Occupational Therapists with the knowledge and practical skills required to undertake home modification assessments and provide recommendations for both minor and complex home modifications.

The course addresses:

  • Assessment of existing dwellings and residential environments
  • Identification of barriers to access and useDevelopment of appropriate home modification recommendations
  • Interpretation of plans and building documentation
  • Application of relevant legislation, codes, standards and guidelines
  • Communication with clients, builders, designers and approval authorities
  • Consideration of construction constraints and existing building conditions

Minor and Complex Home Modifications
The course addresses both Minor Home Modifications and Complex Home Modifications. Students learn how to provide practical recommendations where regulatory compliance can be achieved, as well as strategies for situations where existing building constraints may limit full compliance outcomes.

Legislative and Technical Knowledge

The course includes training in:

  • Disability discrimination legislation
  • National Construction Code (NCC)
  • Relevant Australian Standards
  • Livable Housing Design requirements
  • Access and mobility considerations
  • Existing building constraints
  • Residential design principles
  • Universal Design principles

Participants will gain an understanding of how building requirements interact with functional outcomes and client-centred Occupational Therapy practice.

This course is designed for qualified Occupational Therapists who:

  • Undertake home modification assessments
  • Work with NDIS participants
  • Provide recommendations for accessible housing outcomes
  • Wish to strengthen their technical understanding of residential access requirements
  • Want nationally recognised training in home modifications

The course assumes participants already possess substantial knowledge and experience in client assessment, consultation and clinical decision-making as Occupational Therapists.

Assessment Requirements
To achieve successful completion, participants are required to complete a range of assessment activities demonstrating their ability to:

  • Assess existing dwellings
  • Identify access barriers
  • Develop home modification recommendations
  • Apply relevant legislation, standards and guidelines
  • Provide professional access advice

Assessment tasks must be completed and submitted within four months of course completion.

Outcome: Statement of Attainment for:

  • CPPACC4020 – Provide access advice on building renovations
  • CPPACC5016 – Provide expert access advice on renovations to private dwellings

This course provides Occupational Therapists with nationally recognised training focused on the assessment, specification and implementation of home modifications to support improved accessibility, independence and participation within the home environment.
