The Understanding Access and Universal Design in Streetscapes and Activity Centres one-day course provides participants with a practical understanding of access and Universal Design principles as they apply to streetscapes, activity centres and the public realm.

The course explores how streets, pedestrian environments and public spaces can be planned, designed, managed and maintained to support equitable access, participation and inclusion for people of all ages and abilities.

Participants will gain an understanding of the challenges experienced by people with disability, older people, parents with prams and others who may encounter barriers within the built environment. The course examines the legislative framework that underpins access requirements and introduces participants to the key standards, guidelines and design principles that influence accessible streetscape outcomes.

Through practical examples and case studies, participants will learn how common streetscape elements can either create barriers or support inclusion, and how access and Universal Design considerations can be incorporated into planning, design, maintenance and upgrade projects.
The course is designed to build awareness and confidence in identifying access issues and contributing to more inclusive public environments.

‘I was very impressed with the LHA course facilitator, Lucas Wheeler. He was terrific, very knowledgeable, fantastic use of words to describe meanings and processes and was able to respond really well to all questions. I also liked how he was able to extrapolate from specific questions and weave into dialogue to either give an example or contextualise it in relation to the bigger picture. Thought he was a first class facilitator.’ — Pauline Young, Sales Consultant, Amicum - Aged Care and Retirement Living Specialists
